We have seen an uptick in fraudulent activity recently. Members and non-members tell us they have received fraudulent text messages which include a link leading to a fake Meritrust website. Scammers are sending these messages to a large group of people, hoping to trick them into giving out their information. Please do NOT click on this link or provide any information, as this is a smishing attempt from a scammer posing as Meritrust.

We want to remind everyone to stay vigilant as fake text messages claiming to be from Meritrust continue to surge. Scammers commonly target victims through fake text messages, a technique termed as smishing. The fake text messages look as if they are coming from credible sources – in this case, Meritrust Credit Union – and include a link that leads to a fake Meritrust website. Do NOT click on links or provide any information, as this is smishing attempt from a scammer.

NOTE: Meritrust Fraud Alerts will only ever ask you to say “YES” or “NO” in response to a text. We will never ask you to click a link or login to your account.

What to do when you receive an unexpected text, email or phone call claiming to be from Meritrust:
  • When in doubt, hang up or delete the message then chat with a Meritrust representative to confirm validity. Block the sender and delete the message if you are able.
  • Report fraudulent calls, texts and emails to the Federal Trade Commission. This helps the FTC investigate fraud and scam trends.
